EL RAPTO

2023

This pen-and-ink illustration is a reinterpretation of Simon Vouet’s painting The Rape of Europa, part of the collection at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. The museum launched a competition inviting artists to create new versions of selected works from its collection. For this piece, I chose Vouet’s painting and reimagined it through the lens of the Nilotic Mundari tribes. While maintaining the original composition, the bull figure was transformed to feature the long, distinctive horns typical of these communities. The female figures were replaced by slender Mundari women with fully shaved heads and entirely white bodies, yet they occupy the same positions as in the original painting.
